The Super Centro Melissa
Returning to the boat for the return trip to Ft. Lauderdale was a little tricky since Bocas del Toro is a remote archipelago and better reached by boat. As such, we had to go to the mainland jumping off point called Almirante … swiftly renamed by Andy as “the worst place I’ve ever been.” With its array of board and tin hovels, Almirante is home to the working class who toil in banana fields. From reading our guide books, we were prepared for the boleteros (pushy ticket touts who carry luggage for a commission); however, the fee structure has clearly changed since the last date of publish! Tourist nuisance or entrepreneurial spirit amongst few viable job options? Who knows? Besides the animal waste floating in the ocean, the funniest part of Almirante was that the grocery store was named after me … “Super Centro Melissa.”
