Back Country Horseback Ride

One of our favorite activities was the guided horseback ride through the back country of the Monteverde reserve area.  Our Spanish-only speaking but very competent guide (yet another Rafael) was like the central American horse whisperer!  All of the horses responded to his very presence even while babysitting a bunch of idiot gringo amateur riders.  However, some of the horses became temporarily rebellious, skittish, or edgy as can be seen from several of our action shots!  Overall, the horses were absolutely amazing slogging through knee-deep mud, treacherous inclines, and rocky streams.  Rafael assigned Andy a rather small and slouchy looking horse, and I’m not gonna lie, we felt kinda bad for that horse.  By the end of ride though, we had renamed the horse Lance Armstrong!  He just kept going and going!  The horses were a little skinny, and notice in the pictures that upon any break in the action, they are scarfing grass like crazy!
