Bocas Town Downpour
Not a Great Place for the Laundry!
Andy and I had hoped to see more of Bocas del Toro, but unfortunately, it rained for most of the time even though it was supposedly the “dry season”. We were constantly promised by overly optimistic locals that the sun would be coming out any second. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any direct sunshine at all, and so the weather was not conducive to scuba diving, hiking, exploring other islands, or anything outdoors at all. Thus, we stayed on the patios of cafes and bars, watched the rain and the occassional soccer match, and made the most of it!
And when I say rained, I mean rained and rained and rained. When we first arrived and got oriented, we realized that hiring a boat taxi would be our best bet to the hotel. We were very excited to hear that a covered boat taxi was available for just a few bucks more. Because of the downpour and luggage for a month, we decided to “splurge” and go for it. Unfortunately, the covered boat taxi consisted of a regular boat taxi with a small tin roof which was rendered totally useless once the boat started moving. We were drenched already, but after the ride, everything was totally drenched!
Luckily, the rain subsided on the back end of our trip as we returned to Bocas to provision the boat for the return sail north. Although, the rain would not have mattered since the local Chinese grocery was so astounded and pleased with our massive shopping spree, they brought our whole bounty to the boat taxi station for us. To provide some perspective, we needed to outfit the boat with beer, drinking water, and sundries for 7 people for about 8 days which filled about 5 large boxes and required 2 hand trucks for a cashier grand total of about $400.
