Bridge of the Americas

Built between 1959 and 1962 by the U.S. at a cost of $20 million, the Bridge of the Americas crosses the Pacific Ocean approach to the Panama Canal near Panama City connecting North and South America.  With a truss arch design, the bridge is 5,425 feet long in 14 spans, abutment to abutment, and the main span measures 1,128 feet.  The highest point of the bridge is 384 feet above mean sea level, and the clearance under the main span is 201 feet at high tide.
