Casco Viejo Landmarks

With the crumbling brown facade and white-washed sides, Iglesia de la Merced was built in the 17th century from rubble salvaged from the ruins of Panamá la Viejo. Right next door is the Casa de la Municipalidad which is a former mansion now used by the city government.

The Altar de Oro (golden altar) is the pride and joy of both Iglesia de San Jose and Casco Viejo. When Captain Morgan sacked and pillaged the original Panama City, a quick-thinking priest painted the golden altar black to hide its value and prevent its looting.
