Ocean Swimming — Southbound
A highlight of the entire sail was stopping in the middle of the ocean to take a quick dip. When the wind stopped, the ocean became as calm as a lake even though we were hundreds of miles from land and at depths of 7000 feet or so. As you can see from the pictures, the glassy water is an amazing azure blue and the visibility so clear that we could see our feet, and beyond! The water is generally warm with cooler currents running around which sometimes startled us wondering what critters might be below. But it was very refreshing since it was sweltering hot without the wind. There were flips, dives, and cannon balls, and even swinging Tarzan-like jumps from a spare halyard! These southbound pictures were taken by Doug who had a waterproof contraption for his digital camera.
