Rural Panamanian Roads

Overall, the general infrastructure in Panama is efficient and modern.  After several very tough car rides in Costa Rica, we were pleased with Panamanian roads until we hit some remote areas during our drive through the provinces.  Although the picture doesn’t quite convey the slope and bumpiness, this totally unacceptable road is considered a major enough thoroughfare to be included on a map in the Lonely Planet guide book.  We ran into a woman covered in dust carrying bags like a pack animal on this road.  When asking her directions in our broken Spanish, we realized that she was speaking a language that neither of us could identify, and that neither broken Spanish nor fluent Spanish would be helpful!
