Volcán Arenal
After we got off the horses, we hiked over to a boat on Lake Arenal which provided us with some great views of Volcán Arenal. The volcano was dormant from approximately 1500 AD until July 29, 1968 when it erupted killing 80 people and 45,000 cattle. Since then, Arenal’s activity is constant but less explosive. Red hot lava is visible on any given clear night, and smoke from lava flow induced fires is visible always. After our boat travels, we jumped in a cab to check out the (rather sleepy) town of La Fortuna. Most of the tourists in our group headed to the hot springs there but Andy and I opted for beers and European football (so many Barcelona fans in central America!).
